made the design on a computer, printed it onto a transparency, projected it onto a wall, put masking tape over the entire area, traced the image onto the masking tape, cut out the masking tape with a razor blade to make a stencil, used a paint roller to apply latex wall paint, and then peeled off the masking tape to reveal the finished product.

How do you solve the problem of floating pieces on your stencil? (I'm very much so a beginner if you couldn't tell from the question!)
I covered my wall in masking tape wherever the stencil was going to be. Then I used an overhead projector to trace the outline on the masking tape. I used an exacto to cut the masking tape and peeled it away from the wall. Then I simply used a paint roller and rolled the paint onto the wall.
